With Kong: Skull Island opening this last weekend, we’re inching our way ever closer to a larger shared universe of kaiju. Next on the docket, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, starring a truly impressive list of Japanese all-stars, Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. But have you stopped to recognize just how weird Mothra is compared to the others? I mean, right off the bat, you’ve got a giant, fire breathing dinosaur, a speedster pterodactyl, a three headed dragon from space, and then a pretty, pretty butterfly. But Mothra’s uniqueness isn’t just skin deep, and the list of things that make her unique amongst the kaiju is so extensive that I find myself wondering: how is Hollywood going to try and play Mothra?
So I wrote an article about it on Kulture Shocked. I really, really hope the American films will try to do Mothra justice, not just because I’m a fan, but because it would be really bold and incredibly unique. But one things for sure: give me the Mothra fairies, or don’t give me Mothra at all.
